Two Wi-Fi data plans will be available:

  • The ‘Broadband 5GB 1 month’ tariff has a one month contract for 5GB of data, and includes the MiFi wireless modem for a one-off charge of £69.99. At the end of the first month, the service is charged at £15 a month.
  • A ‘Ready to Go’ kit that gives you 3GB worth of data to be used over a 3 month period, plus the MiFi modem for a total charge of £99.99. After the data allowance has been used up, the modem can be used on a pay-as-you-go basis.

MiFi is 3’s own trademark for a Mobile Wi-Fi service. The wireless modem allows you to connect multiple laptops, netbooks, cameras, mobile phones or any other device that uses Wi-Fi, to 3’s 3G mobile network, essentially acting as a localised Wi-Fi hotspot.

As with a home Wi-Fi router, there will be a network security pass code which you’ll need to enter into each connected Wi-Fi device to connect to the Wi-Fi network. The MiFi modem itself connects using a 3 sim card.

MiFi modem has five-hour claimed battery life

Marc Allera, sales and marketing director at 3 UK says: ‘Mobile Wi-Fi is the future of internet access on the move and we’re bringing it to customers at price points that make it accessible and affordable.

‘It’s the perfect gift for people after genuine wireless internet access on the go to complement the laptops and iPods that will undoubtedly make their way onto Christmas lists across the UK this December.’

The MiFi modem is a Huawei E5830 measuring 86x46x10mm and weighing 90g, according to 3. The specification also states that the MiFi modem will operate according to the 802.11b/g wireless standards, with a claimed battery life of up to five hours active usage.
