Recycle old batteries at TescoSupermarket joins battery recycling scheme

Supermarket giant Tesco has revealed that it has joined the BatteryBack scheme, allowing Tesco stores to be able to recycle batteries.

Tesco says that it will install battery recycling points in all of its nationwide stores in advance of a national campaign that the supermarket will roll out in February 2010.

Huw Clifford, purchasing manager of Tesco said: ‘We believe major retailers will be key in helping Britain reach its annual battery recycling target.’

Britain only recycles 3% of batteries, according to industry figures. However, that figure needs to increase to 25% by 2012 in order to meet European regulations.

Retailers are expected to collect approximately 30% of the batteries needed to meet the European Directive.

Civic amenity sites, schools, public buildings and other waste companies will also collect batteries for recycling.
