Alistair Darling used the pre-budget report to introduce a boiler scrappage scheme, which will help homeowners cut carbon emissions.

The chancellor told Parliament that the scrappage scheme would help up to 125,000 consumers replace working G-rated boilers with the latest energy efficient boilers in order to reduce carbon emissions. Mr Darling told the Commons: 'A quarter of all the country's emissions come from households.'

The Energy Saving Trust says: 'By replacing an old G-rated boiler with a new high efficiency condensing boiler and improving your heating controls, you will significantly cut your home's carbon dioxide emissions and could save as much as £235 a year.'

Anyone who enters the scheme will be given up to £400 towards the cost of a new energy efficient boiler or a renewable heat unit.

Green homes

Mr Darling also revealed incentives for homeowners who embrace green technology in their home.

He said: 'From April, people with a home wind turbine or solar panels who plug their excess power into the national grid, will receive on average £900 a year. I intend to make this payment tax free.'
