A number of independent sources are suggesting that Apple will announce its latest product next week: an Apple tablet, likely to be called the Apple iSlate or the Apple iTablet.

Rumours of the portable media device from Apple have been circulating for many months but have intensified in recent weeks.

Apple iSlate rumours

If the rumours are to be believed, then the new media tablet will be announced on January 26th and become available to buy around March, costing anything up to around £1,000.

Media tablets are portable devices that sit somewhere between the mobile phone category and the netbook category. They are similar in size to many ebook readers, but they offer far more versatility.

Touchscreen media tablet

The new device from Apple is expected to feature a 7- to 11-inch screen, and most sources are anticipating a fully touchscreen operable product.

Matthew Bath, Which? technology editor, said: 'Apple changed the world of the mobile phone market with the iPhone, and if the company launches this hotly rumoured iSlate, then we can expect to see the currently fledgling tablet PC market suddenly propelled into the mainstream.

'As usual, Apple is being very tight-lipped about these rumours so we don't expect to know the full details of a new Apple product until an official announcement is made'.
