New Renault Clio eco2 emits just 98g/km CO2 and becomes the French manufacturer’s greenest ever model.
The new model’s full title is something of a mouthful – the Renault Clio dCi 86 eco2 – but we’ll just call it the eco2 for short.
Powered by an 85bhp version of Renault’s long-standing 1.5-litre dCi turbodiesel, it produces 17g/km CO2 less than equivalent ordinary Clio diesels with the same power output – that’s a 15% reduction.
This translates into official combined fuel economy of 76.3mpg – 12.1mpg more than before – giving the Clio eco2 a theoretical range of 923 miles per tank of fuel.
No visual changes
The improvements have been achieved by tweaks to the Clio’s aerodynamics, tyres and drivetrain.
Longer gear ratios, reduced internal friction and bespoke software mapping all help the engine perform more frugally, while the car rides on low rolling resistance Michelin tyres.
Aerodynamic modifications are limited to subtle detail changes and extra underbody cladding, so the eco2 looks virtually the same as other Clio models.
No price premium
And the Renault Clio eco2 will cost exactly the same as non-eco2 dCi Clios, with the same power output, when it goes on sale later this year.
Currently that means from £12,397 – but that price is subject to change as time progresses. Both three- and five-door variants will be available.
It joins an increasingly crowded low-emissions supermini marketplace, with eco versions of the Ford Fiesta, Seat Ibiza, Vauxhall Corsa and Volkswagen Polo among its sub-100g/km rivals.
Greener 1.2 turbo petrol
In other Clio news, Renault has introduced a Euro 5 emissions compliant version of the 1.2 TCe 100 turbo petrol engine. This emits 129g/km CO2 – an improvement of 8g/km – representing a saving of £150 in road tax once new pricing bands come into force in April.
The new Renault Clio 1.2 TCE is available to order now, priced from £12,037.
