Supermarkets beat well-known brands in the Which? Fairtrade and organic chocolate bar taste test
Our panel of expert chocolate tasters rated Tesco's Finest Fairtrade Organic Dominican Republic 70% Plain Chocolate our top dark chocolate bar, followed closely by Waitrose Fairtrade Swiss Dark Chocolate. Which? found that Green & Black’s Organic Dark chocolate was worth considering, with the bar coming in third.
Tesco tops Fairtrade and organic milk chocolate test
A separate test of milk chocolate saw Tesco also come top. Its Finest Fairtrade Organic Ecuadorian 39% milk chocolate was the only one with the right amount of sweetness, according to our expert panel. In almost all cases the high sugar in the milk bars overwhelmed the cocoa.
Which? chief executive Peter Vicary-Smith says: 'Our expert panel taste test of Fairtrade and organic chocolate has been a sweet victory for Tesco. Their bars have outperformed well-known brands and chocolate-lovers can enjoy the mouth-watering flavours with a clear conscience.'
Fairtrade Fortnight began this week and the Which? taste test results show chocolate lovers can head for supermarket own brands and not necessarily miss out.
