Volkswagen has announced details of an all-new Polo GTI due to be unveiled at the 2010 Geneva motor show in March.
With a 180hp 1.4-litre engine and emissions of just 139g/km CO2 the GTI version of the new VW Polo promises to be both fast and eco friendly.
Polo GTI: high power, high tech
Aimed squarely at the likes of the Mini Cooper S, the Polo GTI offers junior styling cues including those distinctive 17-inch alloy wheels and the traditional checked cloth seats.
It’s certainly packed with technology too, the Polo GTI sharing its basic mechanical spec with the Seat Ibiza Cupra.
Both cars use the same 180hp version of Volkswagen’s innovative Twincharger 1.4-litre engine, which uses a supercharger to boost low-end response and a turbo for high-end power. Direct fuel injection also features.
DSG as standard
It’s complex technology for a small hot hatch but that’s just the start of it. Like the Ibiza Cupra the Polo GTI exclusively uses a seven-speed ‘DSG’ automated gearbox with paddle shifters for manual control when needed.
And like the latest crop of fast Seats and VWs, the Polo GTI features ‘XDS’, which uses the ESP stability control to simulate the traction-enhancing effect of a mechanical limited-slip differential.
The Polo’s chassis has also been lowered by 15mm and spring and damper rates revised.
Mean and green
Despite the mechanical similarities the Polo GTI is cleaner, faster and more economical than the Ibiza, the VW’s 139g/km CO2 in particular significantly better than the Seat’s 159g/km.
It also beats the Mini Cooper S, typically a strong performer on CO2. And with a 0-62mph time of just 6.9 seconds the Polo GTI is up there with the very fastest hot hatches in terms of performance.
Due on sale this summer, prices for the Polo GTI will be announced in due course.
