New Saab 9-5 is gunning for Audi A6

Saab has announced prices for its all-new 9-5 saloon, which is expected to arrive in UK showrooms this summer.

Prices start at £26,495 for the entry-level 163bhp 2.0 TiD diesel model. This is £5k more expensive than the outgoing Saab 9-3 and puts this executive saloon directly in the firing line of the and Audi A6. 

Other models include a 216bhp, 2.0-litre turbo petrol for £28,195 plus a range-topping 294bhp 2.8-litre V6 turbo - which also benefits from Saab’s torque-vectoring all-wheel-drive set-up - for £37,995.

Production of the new Saab 9-5 began at the company’s Trollhattan plant on 23 March, and the company’s new owners are making clear statements about the desire to target a more premium market.

Price hike will be justified by improvement in quality 

Just two trim levels will be available from launch: Vector SE and Aero Vector. SE offers part-leather trim, front and rear park assist, 17-inch alloys, electronic climate control, cruise control, , automatic wipers, iPod integration, heated front seats and push-button starting. 

Aero specification adds bespoke front and rear bumpers, full leather trim, sports chassis tuning, 19-inch wheels and bi-xenon headlights.

Those interested in an estate version will be pleased to hear that the Saab 9-5 Sport Combi estate is expected to go on sale in the first half of 2011. Saab dealers are accepting orders for the car from today.
