Energy giant Npower is offering homes in Wales the chance to save up to £900 on a new energy-efficient boiler when they trade in a boiler over 10 years old.
Npower’s scrappage scheme offers a £400 boiler discount, but people aged over 60 will soon be able to boost the discount to £900 by combining it with the Welsh government’s boiler scrappage scheme which comes into force on 6 April 2010. The Welsh government’s boiler scrappage scheme allows the over 60s to save £500 on a new boiler.

Shop around for the best boiler deal
Which? home editor Liz Edwards warns: ‘This Npower discount should be good news for under 60s in Wales, who are not eligible for the government’s scheme. However, it’s important not to assume the company offering the biggest discount will necessarily be offering the best boiler installation deal.
‘When we took a snapshot of boiler installation costs in 2009, we found British Gas charged up to twice as much as the lowest priced independent boiler engineer for the same job. So, if you’re considering replacing your boiler, make sure you get several quotes before you decide on one.’
Npower’s boiler scrappage scheme
Npower’s scheme offers a £400 boiler scrappage discount to any household in Wales which is replacing a boiler more than 10 years old, regardless of the age of the occupants.
Npower’s retail CEO Kevin Miles said: ‘Customers can now enjoy up to £900 off the cost of a new boiler, which could be almost a third off the cost of an installation. This is in addition to savings of nearly £235 off an annual gas bill, compared to a G-rated boiler.’

Welsh boiler scrappage scheme
Only the over 60s will be eligible for the Welsh government’s scrappage scheme. They will be able to claim a £500 voucher towards the cost of installing a new A-rated boiler when they replace an old G-rated one.
The government has allocated £2.5m to the scheme for 2010/11, and expects the scheme to benefit 5,000 homes. From 6 April 2010, households will be able to apply by telephone on 0800 316 2816 or through the Home Energy Efficiency Scheme website.
