Eleven out of 24 of the top travel insurance companies have no clear information about volcanic ash on their websites
One of the biggest questions for people considering booking summer holidays is whether they will be insured for any disruption caused by volcanic ash clouds closing European air space.
Which? is disappointed to find that so many of the top travel insurance companies have no clear information on their websites about the volcanic ash disruption for customers who have been affected by the April eruptions. And 17 of the 24 websites have no clear information about cover for disruption for new customers looking to take out travel insurance.
Rochelle Turner, Head of Research for Which? Travel said: 'Around 30% of people say that they don’t trust insurance providers to pay out on claims. This event will have cemented that lack of trust and may result in many not taking out insurance in future. With medical costs abroad being so high, this is a huge risk to take.'
Lodging a claim
People who booked travel insurance before the first eruption on 15th April may find that they are covered. Not all travel insurance companies will pay out, but DirectLine, Columbus Direct and policies underwritten by AXA, Tokio Marine Insurance Europe Ltd and Fortis are among the big insurance names that have said they are accepting claims.
Most standard travel insurance policies arranged after 15th April are unlikely to cover disruption from Eyjafjallajokull as known events are usually excluded from insurance cover.
