Volvo S60 will launch with one petrol and two diesel engines

Volvo has announced pricing details for its forthcoming S60 four-door coupé – said to be the sportiest model the Swedish marque has ever built.

With a new four-door coupé bodystyle, Volvo claims the S60 will be the sportiest model it has ever produced, with dynamic driving characteristics and powerful engines to match its swooping looks.

Being a Volvo, the S60 is of course also rammed with clever safety equipment – including the optional new  Pedestrian Detection technology with Full Auto Brake.

Performance a priority

At launch the new Volvo S60 will be available with a choice of two diesel engines and one petrol engine, and in three trim levels.

A new 2.0-litre D3 turbodiesel offers 161bhp and up to 54.3mpg (according to preliminary testing figures). This joins the twin-turbo D5 diesel with 202bhp and an official combined fuel consumption figure of 53.3mpg. This engine will also whisk the S60 from 0-62mph in 7.8 seconds.

The petrol is a high-performance T6 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbo with four-wheel drive and Geartronic automatic gearbox. Producing 300bhp it manages 0-62mph in 6.5 seconds, 155mph flat out, and 28.5mpg combined, according to EU testing.

Safety and luxury as standard

Standard kit on the entry-level ES specification includes the City Safety system from the Volvo XC60.

This aims to reduce collisions in stop-start traffic by automatically stopping the S60 whenever the car in front brakes at up to 19mph. Dynamic Stability and Traction Control, anti-whiplash front headrests, six airbags and 16-inch alloy wheels are also fitted.

The SE grade trim builds on this with an upgraded interior finish that includes aluminium inserts, watch-style instrument dials, auto-dimming rear view mirror, electric folding door mirrors, automatic wipers, Bluetooth, rear parking sensors, 17-inch alloys and a more powerful stereo.

The range-topping SE Lux version then adds electric drivers seat adjustment (with memory), leather upholstery, and adaptive headlights with washers.

Pedestrian Detection – optional only

The headline grabbing Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake is the star amongst an extensive options list.

This system uses dual mode radar and a high-resolution camera to not only detect pedestrians but evaluate their ‘pattern of movement’. Should a person then step into its path, the S60 reacts by pre-charging the brakes, sounding an alarm and flashing a light in the head up display designed to resemble a brake light and trigger an immediate response – giving the driver a chance to take their own evasive action.

Should the driver fail to respond the S60 will then apply maximum braking force to avoid or reduce any impact. Up to 21mph it should be able to stop the car completely before an accident occurs; beyond that it will do its best to slow the car to lessen injury.

Pedestrian Detection comes with a fully featured adaptive cruise control system, and costs an extra £1,350 (plus another £150 for the rain sensor on ES models).

Competitive prices

Other option include a Premium Pack for SE and SE Lux – including leather (for the SE), satellite navigation, DAB digital radio and a multimedia audio system – rear seat entertainment systems, automatic gearboxes, and an exterior styling kit.

Prices for the all-new Volvo S60 begin at £23,295 for the D3 ES, rising to £36,745 for the T6 SE Lux. That’s competitive with rivals such as the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series – and even the Ford Mondeo.

On sale now, the new S60 arrives in Volvo showrooms this July.
