UK sports fans wanting to use plastic to apply for the London 2012 Olympic Games, buy merchandise or withdraw cash from an on-site ATM can only do so with a Visa card. MasterCard and American Express cards won’t be accepted.
Visa has secured an exclusive deal with London 2012, which makes cards backed by the provider the only option for people who want to pay for tickets and goods or get cash from venue ATMs. However, non-UK cardholders will be able to use other cards to make payments.
Level playing field
While other events have entered exclusive deals with providers, such as MasterCard with the football World Cup, this deal could put UK sports fans, who have been told that the 2012 Olympics is an inclusive games for all, at a disadvantage.
Martyn Hocking, editor of Which? says: ‘The 2012 Olympics should be equally accessible to all. We want the London 2012 Committee to take the steps necessary to ensure there’s a level playing field and that UK consumers have equal access to the games, whether or not they are Visa cardholders.’
