Peugeot 508 hits UK showrooms in 2011

The Peugeot 508 is the French carmaker’s latest stab at the executive saloon market.

It is designed to replace both the Ford Mondeo-rivalling 407, as well as the larger 607 in one hit. The 508 also previews Peugeot's future design direction.

New design philosophy sparks new-found confidence?

The new Peugeot 508 realises a design philosophy first acknowledged on the SR1 concept car at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show.

Granted, the 508 has gained a few extra pounds in its interpretation, but we can still see the aerodynamic lines, pronounced bonnet creases, wide grille and stretched front lights that we found so appealing on the concept. In an unusual turn of confidence, the Peugeot 508 even adds a name badge that sits just beneath the bonnet shutline.

Available in Saloon and SW body styles

In saloon guise, the Peugeot 508 measures 4.71m in length – that’s 10mm longer than the 407 and 20mm shorter than the slow-selling 607. Peugeot has also confirmed an estate version measuring 4.81m in length will join the line-up - we’re expecting it to be christened the 508 SW.

Efficient engines get stop/start as standard

All petrol and diesel engine models available from launch will be tuned for efficiency and get Peugeot’s new e-HDi stop-start system. Peugeot says this can improve fuel economy by up to 15%.

There also plans to launch the Peugeot 508 with the company’s diesel-electric Hybrid4 technology. Peugeot says this system develops a combined 200bhp via an all-wheel-drive set-up, while producing just 99g/km of CO2. The car also has an all-electric mode for urban driving.

Peugeot expands in Asia

The 508 is also planned to go on sale in China, and be built in an all-new Chinese factory. European versions of the car will continue to be manufactured at Peugeot’s Rennes facility in France.

The Peugeot 508 will make its debut at the Paris Motor Show in October and go on sale in early 2011.
