IFA 2010 preview - 3D, OLED TVs and tablet PCsThe latest tech at IFA, Europe's largest tech show
28 August 2010
The IFA 2010 technology show kicks off in Berlin next week, and Which? will report live from the IFA show floor with news, photos and video reviews of the latest products launched at the show.
Although the show opens on 3 September, we'll be getting to Berlin early to report from press conferences scheduled for the preceding two days, with all the latest launch info available from WhichTech on Twitter, or on our dedicated IFA 2010 news summary page.
2010 marks the 50th IFA show which will have over 1,000 exhibitor stands across 26 halls of the Messe Berlin exhibition complex. All the UK's major tech brands will be exhibiting, including Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, LG and Philips, plus hundreds of smaller brands.
Unlike the Consumer Electronics Show which takes place in Las Vegas each January, IFA focuses on the European rather than US market, so more products are on show which are likely to be released in the UK.
A new feature for IFA in 2010 is the iZone which will showcase products and apps for Apple and Mac products such as the iPhone, iPod and iPad.
There will also be a new section dedicated to ebooks and tablet PCs - the IFA eLibrary.
We'll have to wait and see exactly what products are showcased at IFA 2010, but here are our predictions for some of the technology on offer:
3D TVs at IFA 2010
We rounded up the first 3D TVs to test in our labs recently, and we expect to see many of the second wave of 3D models on show at IFA 2010. We'll drop by all the key manufacturers, including Panasonic, Sony, Samsung and LG, to let you know what they've been working on and what 3D TVs to expect in the shops before Christmas.
Samsung Galaxy Tab
Samsung has already launched a short teaser video on its Galaxy Tab microsite, promising that full details will be unveiled at IFA 2010 on 2 September. Samsung's 7-inch touchscreen tablet looks set to run Android 2.2 (Froyo) and, like Dell's 5-inch Streak, will also be able to make phone calls. Other likely features include HD video recording and playback, and a Flash-compatible web browser.
Archos has also stated that it will showcase five new internet tablets running Android, with screen sizes ranging from 2.8 to 10 inches.
Many other manufacturers such as HP and Toshiba are also expected to unveil their tablets, hoping to emulate the success of the Apple iPad.
OLED TVs
OLED TVs, or organic light emitting diode TVs, were hyped as being the next big thing back in 2008, when we saw them at IFA 2008. Unfortunately, despite Sony's 27-inch prototype and a 15-inch OLED TV from LG, models have remained small and expensive.
OLED TV technology promises better picture quality on a more environmentally-friendly screen, but so far we've only seen 11- and 15-inch versions hitting the shops, both with price tags upwards of £1,500.
LG is reported to be showing its latest OLED TV - a 31-inch model - at IFA 2010. We'll be at the LG stand to bring our first impressions, photos and a video First Look of the latest LG TVs.
IPTVs
We also expect to see plenty of internet-enabled TVs at IFA 2010, with announcements from key players around the latest video content that viewers can expect to see streamed direct to the next generation of IPTVs.
For all the latest from IFA 2010, from TVs to games consoles and mobile phones to tablets, check out our IFA news summary page each day, and follow WhichTech on Twitter to be alerted as soon as each photo gallery and video goes live during the show.
