Chevrolet Cruze hatchback announcedHatchback Chevrolet Cruze on sale in 2011
06 September 2010
Chevrolet has confirmed that it will debut a hatchback version of its Cruze saloon at this year’s Paris Motor Show.
The compact Cruze saloon is apparently proving a bigger sales success than Chevrolet anticipated. Available in 70 countries, it recently became the best-selling passenger car in the Chevrolet range, outpacing the Aveo.
In fact, the Cruze is the best-selling compact saloon full stop in several European markets – including the UK. Surprising? Sure – but how many competing compact saloons are actually available these days? Most European buyers shopping for a compact car opt for a hatchback...
Cruze five-door hatchback
The introduction of a new five-door hatchback Cruze can therefore only strengthen the Chevrolet’s appeal. However, it also faces a much tougher range of opposition.
Exact details about the new Cruze hatchback are being kept back for the Paris Motor Show reveal later this month. But we are promised nearly 400 litres of boot space, a 60/40 split-fold rear seat and a strong ‘body-frame integral system’ construction that should benefit both handling and safety.
Judging by the Cruze saloon line-up, we predict the engine range will consist of 1.6- and 1.8-litre petrol engines, plus a 2.0-litre turbodiesel – and probably three trim levels.
Value for money?
The saloon also benefits from a five-star Euro NCAP crash safety rating and value-led pricing starting at £13,395. Chevrolet's standard ‘5 Year Promise’ includes five years of warranty, servicing, MoTs and roadside assistance.
The Chevrolet Cruze hatchback could be one to watch – especially if you’re a budget-conscious motorist.
Trouble is, you’ll have to wait some time to get it – the launch isn’t scheduled until mid-2011.
