Big brand websites not what they seemRetailer-branded websites owned by other company

30 October 2010

Which? has found that kitchen appliance websites branded Boots, Debenhams, House of Fraser, Marks & Spencer and Next are actually run by a different company.

This isn't clear at first sight on the websites, so if you're shopping at these big names for kitchen appliances or laundry goods, you may not realise that your contract is with DRL - the company that runs the sites - not the big brand.

The websites are:

  • Bootskitchenappliances.co.uk
  • Debenhamskitchenappliances.com
  • Houseoffraserkitchenappliances.co.uk
  • Marksandspencer-appliances.com
  • Nextdomesticappliances.co.uk

Small print

The Next and Debenhams sites don't mention DRL on their homepages, putting it instead in their terms and conditions. The House of Fraser and Boots sites do make reference to DRL under their branding, while the Marks and Spencer site displays it at the bottom of the homepage.

A price check of 11 products revealed no difference in overall price across the websites. Some product prices do vary, but the sites with cheaper prices charge for delivery - the more expensive ones don't.

DRL also runs two lesser-known websites - appliancesonline.co.uk and appliancedeals.co.uk.
