Volkswagen has announced a new entry-level Golf called the Twist – and it’s a bit of a bargain.
Available as a three-door from £12,995 or a five-door from £13,580, the new VW Golf Twist comes in below the previous entry-level Golf S, which currently costs from £14,880 with the same 1.4-litre petrol engine.
Golf Twist comes with £700 of extra kit
Not only is the on the road price some £1,885 less, the Golf Twist is loaded up with an extra £700 in equipment compared to the Golf S.
Additional items include 16-inch ‘Atlanta’ alloy wheels, upgraded stereo with MP3 player connection and a front centre armrest. Safety kit includes stability control and seven airbags – as with all other Golfs.
The catch – if you can call it such – is the engine.
Basic petrol engine
This basic 1.4-litre unit produces just 79bhp and 97lb ft of torque (pulling power), which by modern standards is not very much for a car of the Golf’s size. The 0-62mph dash takes 13.9 seconds, and top speed is 107mph.
On the plus side, VW claims fuel economy of 44.1mpg and 149g/km CO2. So running costs should be reasonable.
Adding further value, a fixed price servicing package is available for £250, which covers the cost of three years or 30,000 miles servicing.
Twist finance also available
Alternatively, the Golf Twist is ‘available through a Volkswagen Solutions finance package at 7.9% APR. This also includes three years or 30,000 miles of servicing, but terms and conditions apply, and it’s subject to status.
The new Volkswagen Golf Twist is on sale now at participating retailers.
