Wilkinson Sword is putting skin care ‘at the heart of shaving’ with the launch of its Hydro razors that claim to hydrate skin while you shave.
The Hydro 3 and Hydro 5 razors – which come with three (£5.99) or five (£7.99) blades – feature a solid lubricant that creates a gel when it’s wet. Wilkinson Sword claims this gel will ‘add moisture with every stroke’ and last twice as long as standard lubricated strips.

We’ve tested other razors from Wilkinson Sword – such as the Quattro Titanium – to see how they compare with brands like Gillette for durability, closeness and comfort of shave. Have a look at our men’s razors review for Best Buy shaving systems and Best Buy disposable razors.
The Hydro has taken six years to research and design, and the Hydro 5 has a design feature that lets you flick the top of the razor – where the gel reservoir is positioned – so it flips to the back of the razor head. This is to help shave trickier areas, such as under the nose, and to aid edging and trimming.
Which? razors expert Matt Stevens says: ‘It’s rare that razor design really moves the product on beyond an extra blade here or a trimming blade there. But Wilkinson Sword has succeeded in giving the Hydro the look and feel of something a bit different.
‘The flip-trimmer is innovative, but it feels a bit gimmicky, it’s yet to be seen how long the gel strip will last and I wonder how many men will use the flip-function mid-shave?
‘We’re going to take the Hydro home and put it to the test – we’ll let you know how we got on soon.’
While razor blades will give a closer shave, electric models can take the hassle out of wet shaving. For pros and cons of both routines – as well as an electric shaver video review – have a look at our electric shaver reviews area.
When buying a razor, make sure you have a look at the price of replacement blades. Brands usually protect new innovations by making sure only their own blades will fit – and there can be a range in price.
The RRP for four Wilkinson Sword Hydro blades is £5.49 (Hydro 3) or £7.49 (Hydro 5). The razors will be available on the high street from October 2010.
