Electrolux says its new Powerglide Pet Plus vacuum cleaner is just what pet owners need to rid their homes of unwanted pet hair and odour.
Aimed at the 38% of households with a pet, this new £160 vacuum cleaner comes with a specially-designed powered Fur Fighter pet brush, with rubber nodules designed for quick hair pick-up. Electrolux says the brush is ideal for use on upholstery, curtains and carpets and it fits into a special self-cleaning docking station on the vac, which sucks the hair off the brush and into the vacuum.
Which? Home editor Liz Edwards says: ‘It seems to be the season for new pet-related vacuum products. This launch is hot on the heels of Dyson’s recent invention – the Dyson Groom vac tool – which we tried out on some dogs in our first look video review.
‘Both promise to help households keep their homes free of pet hair, but we won’t know exactly how effective the Electrolux vac is until we’ve put it through our tough lab testing.’
Picking up pet hair
To challenge vacuum cleaners on their pet hair pick-up performance, our lab testers comb cat and dog hairs into an area of carpet slightly larger than an A3 piece of paper, then time how long each vacuum cleaner takes to pick it up.
Liz adds: ‘While some vacuums score excellently in this test, it’s quite surprising to see that several “pet” vacuums – designed specifically to excel at picking up hair – actually perform quite poorly and are outdone by models that make no claims about pet hair pick-up.
‘We’ve already tested this vac’s predecessor – the – and will be testing the new Pet Plus soon. We’ll have new results online in January 2011, but if you can’t wait until then use our compare vacuum features tool now to see all the models we’ve reviewd that score well for picking up pet hair.’
Pet vacs not just for pets
Electrolux claims that this vacuum’s hair pick-up performance will also appeal to women with long hair. As six in 10 women under 30 fit this category – Electrolux expects the vacuum to have wide-reaching appeal.
Other features of interest on the Z3282 Powerglide Pet Plus vacuum include an Arm & Hammer filter – which uses baking soda to eliminate odours – and a new motorised turbo nozzle. It’s available now direct from Electrolux (order via its floorcare direct line on 08445 614614) and will be in high street shops soon.
