Apple to launch iPad-only digital newspaper Publication could cost as little as 62p a week
31 January 2011
Apple and News Corporation, the owners of the News of the World and the Sunday Times newspaper, are to launch an iPad-only newspaper on Wednesday (February 2nd).
The Daily, a digital newspaper made exclusively for iPad, will cost 62p a week, and news and editorial will be taken from a US-perspective.
According to an invitation sent out to the press last week, The Daily will be launched in New York, by Rupert Murdoch, News Corporation chairman and chief executive officer, and Eddie Cue, Apple’s vice president of internet services.
According to various reports, Rupert Murdoch revealed details of The Daily in an interview with The Australian Financial Review magazine in November last year, where he said: ‘It will only be seen on tablets. It will only employ journalists – and maybe eight to 10 technicians.’
Murdoch also said the Daily will need to achieve a circulation of 800,000 readers to become economically viable. He thought this was achievable, given the proliferation of iPads among consumers and businesses. ‘By the end of the next year there will be 30-40 million iPads,' he predicted.
‘I believe every single person will eventually have one, even children.’
