Kindle books outsell paperbacks on Amazon.com Amazon hails success of ebooks
28 January 2011
Amazon has sold more ebooks than paperbacks for the first time, the online retailer has revealed in its financial results for the holiday season last year.
The figures, based solely on sales on its US website, show Amazon sold 115 Kindle books for every 100 paperback books.
Kindle sales exclude all free books, which Amazon state 'would make the numbers even higher'. Ebooks surpassed hardback sales in July, and for the fourth quarter were treble that of hardbacks.
As Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon, explained: 'Thanks to our customers, we achieved two big milestones. We had our first $10 billion quarter, and after selling millions of third-generation Kindles with the new Pearl e-ink display during the quarter, Kindle books have now overtaken paperback books as the most popular format on Amazon.com...this milestone has come even sooner than we expected - and it's on top of continued growth in paperback sales.'

More popular than Harry Potter
Kindle ebook sales were driven by the success of the 3rd generation Kindle reader. In 2010 it surpassed Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows as the bestselling product in Amazon's history. Amazon also increased its net sales by a massive 40% to $34.2 billion in 2010.
