Ryanair is letting its passengers reserve seats

Ryanair, the budget airline that once considered charging its passengers to use the toilet, is to allow people to reserve seats on its flights for the first time.

As part of a new trial, customers will be able to pre-book seats on two routes – Dublin-Gatwick and Dublin-Malaga – for a fee of €10 each way.

The offer allows passengers to reserve seats in the front two rows of the plane 'for prompt exit on arrival', or in over-wing rows with slightly more legroom.

Ryanair seat reservations

Seat reservation, effective on the trial routes from 16th May, is the latest in a line of optional extras passengers can add to their ticket when they book Ryanair flights online. Other products include hold baggage and a priority pass (charged at €4 each way) that lets passengers board just before others.

But the new idea marks a big departure from traditional budget airline tactics. Previously, it was thought seat reservations would increase admin costs and put additional strain on the airlines’ already tight turnaround times.

Ryanair's Stephen McNamara said, 'For just €10 passengers can pre-book their favourite seats. If this new service proves popular with passengers then we will role it out selectively on other Ryanair routes in the coming months'.

Compensation levy

Earlier this month we reported on Ryanair's new compensation levy – a £2-per-flight charge to cover cancellations and delays that are 'outside the airline's control'.
