Vauxhall has released the first official confirmation that the Astra GTC will be going into production.
More than that, in fact, you’ll be able to place an order for one in six weeks’ time, as the new Astra three-door goes on sale on 7 June – several months ahead of its official public debut at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
Vauxhall Astra GTC: the new Sport Hatch
Beyond this confirmation and a pair of images depicting the new car in a virtual environment, Vauxhall isn’t really telling us very much about the new Astra GTC at this stage.
All the info we have so far is that it will feature a three-door body with dramatic proportions, yet will be capable of carrying of five adults. It will feature the very best of Vauxhall’s latest technology, as well as unique chassis features.
In theory, that’s a lot of features. And while the part about the three-door body shape was fairly self evident from the images, we can also draw some inferences about the technology. Vauxhall’s latest and greatest kit includes active suspension, adaptive headlights, and the ability to read road signs in order to alert you to changes in the speed limit.
Extra tech and turbo power?
We would expect all of this and more to feature somewhere in the Astra GTC model range. As for the new chassis enhancements, the sensible money is on the introduction of a Volkswagen-style XDS electronic front differential for improved cornering grip.
Engine line-up will certainly comprise all the modern, small-capacity turbo petrols Vauxhall has at its disposal, alongside a range of economical diesel engines. Expect a range-topping VXR performance variant to make an appearance, too – although not necessarily right from launch.
In this UK this autumn
The 7 June on-sale date will coincides with the announcement of further official details, Vauxhall assures us – although we’re absolutely not convinced that putting down money on a car that you can’t even see in the metal, let alone drive, until September is really a very good idea.
The new Vauxhall Astra GTC is scheduled to reach UK dealerships in autumn this year.
