Sales of ebooks soar at Bloomsbury Demand for digital delivery increases
31 May 2011
Bloomsbury, the publisher of the Harry Potter series of books, has reported a huge increase in its ebook sales.
Sales of the electronic books increased to £1.5 million in 2010, up from £79,000 in 2009, the publisher said.
Sales in 2011 look to smash the 2010 record, with sales between January and March this year already at £1.1 million.
Bloomsbury reported that both its UK and US ebook sales divisions were growing strongly.
It said with the Kindle now firmly established in the UK market and recently launched in Germany, there was now a focused effort to sell ebooks throughout the world.

‘This is an exciting time for Bloomsbury: demand for digital delivery, including ebooks, is increasing significantly; it will change the publishing business model creating one worldwide market,’ said Nigel Newton, Bloomsbury chief executive.
‘The retail landscape is changing with more titles being sold online or through supermarkets, in ebook or print format. The impact of digitisation is becoming considerable and acquiring world English rights is of premier importance in the digital future.'
In October 2010, 42% of the US sales of Bloomsbury's Man Booker Prize winner, The Finkler Question, were ebooks.
