BMW has revealed a brand new 542bhp M5 super saloon, based on the latest 5 Series.
With a twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8, the new fifth generation BMW M5 is not only 10% more powerful than its predecessor, it’s also an impressive 30% more efficient, too.

New BMW M5: massive performance
With 542bhp and 501lb ft of torque (pulling power), the new BMW M5 isn’t short of performance. Compared with the previous M5, that’s 10% horsepower and 30% more pulling power – and with maximum torque now arriving at just 1,500rpm the new M5 is sure to offer absolutely scorching performance.
Driving the rear wheels via a seven speed M Double Clutch Transmission (M DCT), the official figures claim it’ll dispense with the 0-62mph dash in just 4.4 seconds, with 0-124mph taking only 13.0 seconds.
In traditional German super saloon fashion, top speed is electronically limited to 155mph, but as is increasingly common, BMW is offering an M Driver’s Package that raises this to 190mph.

New BMW M5: 30% more efficient
Given this performance, the M5’s efficiency can be considered a relative success.
According to official EU testing, the twin turbo 4.4-litre V8 returns 28.5mpg combined – another 30% improvement over the previous M5’s naturally aspirated 5.0-litre V10. This means CO2 emissions of 232g/km CO2.
The use of ‘twinscroll’ turbocharger technology and the new dual clutch gearbox help here, but the new M5 also benefits from a stop-start system and brake energy regeneration.
The gearbox has both fully automatic and manual functions – the latter controlled via paddles mounted on the steering wheel – plus a choice of three modes for sporty, relaxed or efficient driving.

BMW M5: electronic trickery
This is just one example of the M5’s multifaceted, computer-controlled, customisation options – which also allow the driver to change steering, suspension and engine characteristics right through from Efficient to Sport Plus.
There’s even a setting to soften the throttle response when driving in heavy traffic. And an Active M differential that works with the Dynamic Stability Control to minimise wheelspin to make this high performance rear-wheel drive car as thrilling yet as safe as possible.
Further high-tech highlights include the latest BMW Head-Up Display, DAB digital radio, four-zone air conditioning, adaptive xenon headlights, night vision, rear view camera and speed limit information – plus the familiar BMW iDrive control interface and 10.2-inch central display screen.
Power doesn’t come cheap
Unsurprisingly, as BMW’s flagship performance model the new M5 doesn’t come cheap.
It goes on sale in the UK this November, priced at £73,040.
Subtly enhanced looks, 19-inch alloy wheels, quad exhausts and big six-piston brakes complete the package.
