Facebook’s popularity soars among the over 50s Audience growth driven by 50+ age group

More and more over 50s are using Facebook, according to the latest figures from research firm Nielsen.
Between 2009 and 2011, the number of 50-64 year olds visiting the social networking site rose by 84%.
In addition, the number of over 65s visiting the site increased by 81% across the same period.
There was also a 65% increase in the numbers of men aged between 50-64 visiting Twitter, the micro blogging site over the last the last two years.
The number of women aged over 65 using Twitter grew by a staggering 96% over the same period.
Overall, Facebook’s UK audience rose 41% since May 2009. Then, the profile of Facebook’s audience was notably skewed towards 18-34 year olds, the resarchers said.
The research study also discovered that in May this year, 26.8m UK citizens logged onto Facebook, making it the second most-visited website behind Google.
The research study was carried out by Nielsen on behalf of the UK Online Measurement Company (UKOM).
Commenting on the rise, James Smythe, UKOM general manager said: ‘The growth in audiences to these social networks is now primarily driven by the 50+ age group.
‘Just a few years ago, this group may have found itself out of place on these sites. Now, on Facebook, for example, they account for more new adults visiting the site in the last two years than the under 50s.’
