Citroen and Peugeot have both announced new crossover SUVs, ready to do battle with the likes of the Ford Kuga.

The Citroen C4 Aircross and Peugeot 4008 are both based on the Mitsubishi ASX, and both are due to debut at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show in March.

Citroen C4 Aircross and Peugeot 4008

This is not the first time Peugeot and Citroen have developed a Mitsubishi-based model; the Citroen C-Zero and Peugeot iOn electric cars are rebadged versions of the Mitsubishi i-MiEV.

The three marques have also collaborated on a full-size SUV, as the Citroen C-Crosser and Peugeot 4007 share underpinnings with the Mitsubishi Outlander. Now, as then, the fundamental differences are limited to the exterior styling, with the underlying engineering remaining essentially unchanged.

For the 4008 and the C4 Aircross, this means a choice of front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, offered in combination with two diesel engines and two petrol engines – although the larger 2.0-litre petrol is unlikely to be sold in Europe.

Peugeot and Citroen have high hopes for their new vehicles as 'world cars' – with specific sales aims for Russia and China.

The Citroen C4 Aircross

CO2 emissions may be as low as 145g/km

Economical diesel engines

That certainly doesn’t make them irrelevant for the UK and Europe, however, as the crossover segment continues to maintain popularity as a compromise between traditional saloon cars and off-roaders.

The entry point for both marques will be a 1.6-litre 114bhp petrol model, while a 1.8-litre HDi turbodiesel offers 148bhp. If the Mitsubishi is anything to go by, CO2 emissions could be as low as 145g/km with claimed fuel economy of 51.4mpg.

The high-tech Japanese diesel will be complimented in both French models by a Peugeot-Citroen 1.6-litre HDi unit with 108bhp, aiming to achieve even lower CO2 emissions and greater fuel economy. Expect to see it added to the ASX range early in the new year.

Full specification is yet to be announced for either vehicle, but highlight items confirmed so far include a panoramic roof, reversing camera, LED interior illumination, 18-inch alloy wheels, touchscreen satellite navigation and USB/Bluetooth connectivity.

Unsurprisingly, there is also no pricing info at this stage, but the Citroen C4 Aircross and Peugeot 4008 are due to reach UK dealerships in the second half of 2012.

If you can’t wait, the Mitsubishi ASX is available now, priced between £15,999 and £24,399.
