Audi announces five-door A1 Sportback Premium equipment and added practicality for A1
23 November 2011
Audi’s A1 has already proved a match for the Mini Cooper with high levels of build quality and refinement. Now the German brand has launched a five-door A1 Sportback.
Audi A1 Sportback: premium appeal
Superminis are not usually known for their refinement or technology, but the five-door A1 Sportback carries over the premium feel that is so integral to the three-door A1.
The A1 Sportback inherits features from the Audi’s more expensive models to improve efficiency and is available with stop-start across the entire range.
Engines range from the 85bhp 1.2-litre TFSI petrol to the 104bhp 1.6-litre TDI diesel, the latter returning a claimed 74.3mpg and emitting a car tax-evading 99g/km CO2.
The Sportback has a 6.5-inch multimedia interface screen, front and rear electric windows, air conditioning and a single CD audio system with MP3 compatibility as standard.
Options include Bluetooth telephone and music streaming, a 14-speaker Bose surround-sound stereo and provision for SD card-based satellite navigation.
Audi A1 Sportback: improved practicality
Audi has paid close attention to improving the A1’s ergonomics and packaging over the three-door variant, while keeping the car’s footprint broadly similar.
The Sportback stands six millimetres taller and six millimetres wider than its three-door cousin, offering a small amount of extra head- and shoulder-room, and allowing for three passengers in the back, as opposed to the three-door’s two-seat arrangement.
The roomier Sportback improves the A1’s versatility – one of the three-door’s significant drawbacks – while retaining its city-friendly dimensions.
Boot space remains the same as three-door model, at 270-litres with the seats up. This rises to 920-litres with the standard split/folding rear seat stowed.
Audi A1 Sportback: new exterior styling
The A1 Sportback offers two new exterior styling options over the three-door car. It is available with a painted contrasting roof colour as opposed to the three-door’s roofline-only option.
The Sportback will also offer customers a 12th paint colour, Samoa Orange, which will be exclusive to five-door models.
Priced at £13,980 for the basic 1.2-litre TFSI SE manual, rising to £21,270 for the 1.4-litre TFSI S Line with S tronic gearbox, the A1 Sportback goes on sale later this month. Deliveries start in spring next year.
