Which? and 38 degrees launched The Big Switch on Monday – calling on consumers to join together to cut their energy bills – and 50,000 people have signed up already.
As part of its Affordable Energy Campaign, Which? is offering consumers the chance to take part in a UK first – using collective power to get a market-leading energy deal.
Executive director of Which? Richard Lloyd, said: ‘It’s encouraging that more than 50,000 people have signed up to The Big Switch in less than 48 hours, but we’re urging people to get their friends, family, work colleagues and neighbours to join the campaign too.
‘The greater the numbers that sign up, the stronger our bargaining power when it comes to negotiating with the energy companies.
‘This new way of joining together to cut energy bills has clearly captured people’s imagination and tapped into their frustration with rising energy bills. Next we’ll need the energy industry to play their part.’
What is The Big Switch?
Which? and 38 Degrees are calling on consumers to join together to cut their energy bills, using a completely new way of buying energy.
Consumers can register their interest through The Big Switch website until the end of March, when energy companies will be invited to submit a market leading deal and take part in a reverse auction
Once we’ve secured a deal, we’ll notify people of the outcome either via email or text message and they can choose whether or not to accept it. There’s no commitment or obligation to sign-up to the new deal, so if people decide to stay with their existing tariff, that’s absolutely fine too.
Why should you take part?
People tell us they’re worried about paying their energy bills, but we know that the number of different tariffs available on the market can be baffling.
The Big Switch could help people get a better deal. We hope to negotiate a new tariff that will be the cheapest on offer. It’s totally free to sign-up and there’s no obligation to switch. Which? is urging people to encourage their friends and family to sign up to – the more people who join, the stronger our bargaining power.
How to sign up
Just go to www.whichbigswitch.co.uk and register before 31 March 2012. We’ll then get in touch to ask you a few more questions about your current gas and electricity supplier(s) and tariff(s) so that Which? can negotiate the best deal with the energy suppliers.
Finally, once we’ve negotiated a new deal with an energy company, we’ll get in touch to let you know exactly how much you can save by switching. If you choose to switch to the new deal, Which? will handle this for you.
