The January sales failed to tempt shoppers onto the high street, with many people choosing to visit out-of-town retail parks instead.
The number of shoppers on the high street was down 0.9% in January 2012 compared to January 2011, according to the British Retail Consortium.
Numbers for December 2011 were better – with shoppers up 5% compared to December 2010 – but overall, the number of high street shoppers fell 4.8% in 2011.
Meanwhile, out-of-town retail parks have seen an increase in footfall, with shopper numbers up in both December 2011 and January 2012.
Which? shopping expert Matt Clear said: ‘High street shops have an increasingly tough job as they deal with difficult economic conditions and strong competition from online shops and out-of-town shopping centres.
‘Shops need to offer great customer service and a good range of products at reasonable prices, rather than just relying on sales.
‘Our survey of the best and worst high street shops shows which shops are getting this right and which need to do more.’
