Cooking with a steamer
Steaming is a healthier way to cook than boiling, as steamed food retains more nutrients. You can cook a range of food in a steamer without their flavours mixing too much, although you have to be careful where you place raw meat, so that juices don't contaminate other foods.
Most steamers consist of a base for boiling water, around three cooking compartments, a built-in timer and a water gauge.
Take a look at our guide to buying a steamer for more advice and tips.
Testing steamers
We've put more than 20 steamers through their paces in our labs, including models from bestselling steamer brands Tefal, Morphy Richards and Russell Hobbs.
Using carrots, broccoli, new potatoes, salmon and chicken breasts, we cook a combination of foods in each model, time how long it takes, and rate each model on ease of use and cleaning as well as build quality.
See our steamer reviews for details of all of the models we've tested and which scored highly enough to be rated Best Buys.
