Mercedes has announced prices for its new SL roadster. Available in two different guises, the SL goes on sale in the UK in June, starting at £72,495.
Mercedes SL350 and SL500
The new Mercedes SL is available in two specifications – SL350 and SL500 – denoting the car’s engine.
The SL 350 uses a 306bhp 3.5-litre V6 engine and costs £72,495. Performance is brisk with 0-62mph taking 5.9 seconds. With Mercedes BlueDirect direct injection, efficiency is better than before – Mercedes claims 37.7mpg – more than 10mpg better than the current model recorded in our test facility.
The SL 500 costs £83,445 and employs a 4.7-litre twin-turbo V8 engine producing 435bhp. This gives a 0-62mph time of 4.6 seconds with a claimed 30.7 mpg on paper and 214g/km CO2 (£270 car tax).
Both vehicles get climate control, Bluetooth, satellite navigation and 18-inch alloy wheels fitted as standard.
The new SL uses aluminium extensively throughout its chassis to help reduce weight and improve efficiency. The lightweight material means the new two-seat roadster is up to 140kg lighter than its predecessor.
The SL’s customary folding metal hard-top roof is retained for the new car and can be raised or lowered in 20 seconds.
AMG performance models
The SL 350 and SL 500 will be joined by the AMG-tuned SL63 AMG and SL65 AMG performance models later in the year.
The SL 63 AMG is powered by a 537bhp 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8 engine, which propels it to 62mph in 4.3seconds. The more powerful SL65 AMG uses a 630bhp 6.0-litre twin-turbo V12, but despite its near 100bhp advantage, is only 0.3 seconds quicker from 0-62mph.
