Volkswagen has unveiled a performance-oriented version of its Polo supermini. The Polo WRC Street will go on sale in the UK in late 2013.
Polo WRC Street concept
The sportiest Polo features a new bodykit comprising a deeper front airdam, plus a diffuser and boot lip spoiler at the rear.
Larger alloy wheels, new sports suspension and a bespoke white and blue colour scheme – complete with ‘R-WRC’ inscriptions – also feature.
The latest addition to the Volkswagen Polo range is initially being shown in concept form only. However, the German carmaker has confirmed a production version of the Polo WRC Street will go on sale in late 2013.
Polo concept inspired by motorsport
The WRC Street has been inspired by Volkswagen’s exploits in the World Rally Championship. As such, the car receives a 218bhp version of the 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine found in the firm’s larger Golf GTI.
An 11bhp power increase and a 120kg lighter kerb weight should see the Polo WRC Street eclipse the Golf GTI’s 6.9-second 0-62mph time. Expect the most powerful Polo in the range to reach 62mph from rest in around 6.5 seconds.
Thanks to a weight reduction over the Golf GTI, efficiency should still be competitive, despite the increase in power. In our lab tests, the GTI’s 2.0 TSI engine recorded a measured 32.9mpg combined, exceeding VW’s claims by 1.0mpg.
New Polo on sale in 2013
VW has not yet confirmed pricing and specification information for the Polo WRC Street, but expect prices to start above the current range-topping Polo GTI 1.4 DSG’s £19,560.
More information will be released closer to the car’s 2013 launch.
