The Samsung Galaxy S3, Samsung’s latest top-of-the-range smartphone, has the best battery life of any smartphone in Which? testing history.
The new phone, which is Samsung’s answer to the iPhone 4S, managed 726 minutes of calls on medium 3G reception, 91 minutes better than the next best model – the HTC One X – and 168 minutes more than the iPhone 4S. It remains to be seen if the Apple iPhone 5, the sixth-generation iPhone, will reclaim the top-spot, but for the moment it’s Samsung that can lay claim to the crown of longest lasting smartphone.

How Which? tests smartphone battery life
No Which? mobile phone review is published without a scientific evaluation of battery life performance. We test every phone by recording how long they are able to make calls over medium reception levels, browse the web on a 3G connection, and how long it takes to fully recharge the battery. Using a medium strength 3G signal provides a more realistic impression of how phones will perform in real life, rather than the makers’ best case scenarios.
We also use expert panels to assess the sound quality of calls made to and from the phone and how easy it is to use, as well as other features including the quality of the camera, music player and web browser on the handset. Read our how we test mobile phones page for more information about the testing process.
