Which? reveals two Best Buy vacs – and four to avoid

Dyson DC50 upright and DC47 cylinder tested

The latest test of 11 vacuum cleaners has pitted vacs from top manufacturers including Dyson, Miele and Hoover, and found two great Best Buys. We also tested Dyson’s brand new tool for pet hair – but is it any good?

In our ongoing quest to find the best vacuum cleaners for cleaning your home, our latest test is packed with models for all requirements.

We’ve tested cylinder and upright vacuums, bagged and bagless, premium and affordable models. Plus some lightweight vacs that you won’t struggle to get up and down the stairs.

Of these vacs, we’ve found two fantastic Best Buys. But we’ve also discovered four vacuums that are so bad at cleaning we’ve had to label them as Don’t Buys.

Dyson’s new tool – a boon for pet owners?

The most recent vacs to emerge from Dyson have been through our testing regime.

  • The DC50 is Dyson’s smallest upright vacuum to date, and features a retractable handle to help make it easy to store.
  • The DC47 cylinder vacuum is one of the smallest capacity vacs we’ve seen at 0.6litres. But weighing only 6.1kg – it’s one and a half bags of sugar lighter than the average vac.

Dyson has also decided to re-invent the mini turbo tool. The new ‘Tangle-Free Turbine tool’ uses contra rotating brushes to suck up hair. The claim, as the name suggests, is that hair will never catch in the bristles – a common problem with regular turbo tools and their rotating brush bars.

The Tangle Free Turbo tool comes with the DC50 Animal as standard but is compatible with a number of different models: DC33 Animal, DC40 Animal, DC41 Animal, DC41 Animal Complete, DC41i, DC39 Animal, DC39i, DC39 Animal Complete, DC39 Animal.

To find out if it’s worth shelling out the £45 needed, read about the new tool in our expert review of the Dyson DC50.
