Passengers at Heathrow are facing delays and cancellations today after a British Airways plane was forced to make an emergency landing due to a ‘technical fault’.
Both runways were closed when the flight BA762 from Heathrow to Oslo returned to the airport shortly after 9am. The southern runway reopened shortly afterwards, but delays and cancellations were expected for the rest of the day.
Eyewitness reported seeing smoke coming from one of the engines, and there was speculation the plane had flown into a flock of birds, but BA said the incident was due to a technical fault.
Refunds and compensation

Technical problems can be ‘extraordinary circumstances’ but not where the problem should have been picked up by routine maintenance.
Heathrow delays and cancellations
BA said there would be ‘significant disruption’ to flights arriving and departing from Heathrow. Anyone whose flight was cancelled would be able to rebook or receive a refund.
