Hot Car Deal – Toyota Avensis Tourer

Save money on Toyota's practical estate car

IMPORTANT: Read the information at the bottom of this page before going ahead with any car purchase.

The Toyota Avensis Tourer is easy to live with and easy to drive. Good safety equipment and a large boot make it a sensible family car – especially if you get a big discount.

Angular and slightly awkward-looking, the Avensis Tourer has never stood out alongside fashionable ‘lifestyle’ estates like the Audi A4 Avant or Volvo V60. However, if you’re more concerned about value for money and the all-round ownership package, the Avensis is a good bet.

We’ve hunted down three of the best deals on the Toyota Avensis Tourer, including more than £6,000 off the well-equipped T-Spirit version.

Sign up to Which? for £1 to find out how the Avensis stacks up in our lab and track tests. And what real owners think of it.

Save £6,000 on Toyota Avensis Tourer 2.0 diesel

Two diesel engines are available in the Avensis Tourer: the 126bhp 2.0-litre returns claimed fuel economy of 61.4mpg, while the latest 150bhp 2.2 is quoted at 50.4mpg. Neither engine matched these claims in our more realistic tests, but the 2.0 is certainly cheaper to run.

Toyota phased out its old T2, TR, T4 and T-Spirit trim levels earlier this year, replacing them with Active, Icon, Icon+ and Excel. But some of the old-stock cars still remain – and they are going cheap.

Discounted New Cars has the entry-level Avensis Tourer 2.0 D-4D T2 for just £16,263, a saving of £4,681 off list price. You’ll get air-con, Bluetooth, a CD player and front/rear curtain airbags, so it’s hardly basic inside.

Alternatively, the same broker has the top-spec 2.0 D-4D T-Spirit for £21,101, a £6,294 saving. This version comes fully loaded with sat nav, cruise control, xenon headlights, electric seats and a reversing camera.

Discount on Avensis Tourer 2.2 diesel automatic

If you want an automatic gearbox, you need to opt for the more powerful 2.2-litre diesel engine. Be prepared to take a hit on fuel economy, though – Toyota claims 44.1mpg for the Avensis Tourer 2.2 auto.

Carfile is currently offering the latest 2.2 D-CAT Icon auto for £23,151. That’s £2,454 off list price – a useful discount to put towards those fuel bills.

Mid-range Icon is our pick of the new spec levels and includes climate control air-con, sat nav, reversing camera, DAB radio and rain-sensing wipers. Try adding all that to an A4 Avant and see how much it costs…

Hot Deal hunters please note:

• The car brokers and deals featured are not vetted, endorsed or recommended by Which?. Always check the specifics of the deal so you know exactly what you are getting and who is supplying the car. Make sure all aspects of the deal are confirmed in writing before committing to buy.
• Not all brokers deal in UK sourced vehicles, and this may have an impact on standard equipment and warranty levels.
• The term ‘pre-reg’ or ‘pre-registered’ refers to vehicles that are brand new but already registered with the DVLA. This means that you will appear as the second owner on the V5 registration document.
• Beware of unscrupulous brokers who tell you they will have to retain the V5 registration document for a period of time after your purchase of the car. Vehicles sold this way may be cheap, but there are legal implications, including the risk that you the buyer could be committing a criminal offence when you drive the car, so they should be avoided.
