Which? has revealed its top 10 cars for towing.
If you ever need to tow a caravan, boat or trailer, you’ll need something that can not only pull its weight – literally – but which can also provide comfortable transport for your family and their luggage.
Which? independent testers have put new cars through their paces to come up with a list of the 10 best tow cars. The consumer body has split tow cars into three classes: large 4x4s, medium 4x4s/estate cars, and smaller cars.
Here we reveal the top-scoring tow car in each class.

Best full-size 4×4 tow car: VW Touareg
If you’ve got something big to tow, like a horse box or multi-berth caravan, you’re going to need something pretty serious to cope.
The top-scoring car in the large 4×4 category is the Volkswagen Touareg. All versions on sale have a very impressive towing capacity (3.5 tonnes) but diesel engines make the most sense as they boast excellent torque (pulling power), which is vital when towing.
The Touareg is a capacious car that’s also very safe and capable on-road, with excellent engines and impressive refinement.
Best estate tow car: Ford Mondeo Estate
It may not be a 4×4, but the Mondeo Estate can still tow up to 2,200kg with a 2.2 TDCi engine and Durashift transmission. Even petrol versions make impressive tow cars.
The Mondeo Estate has also got the biggest boot we’ve ever tested so you can be sure of chucking in all your clobber for a major adventure. And it’s very comfortable to drive and holds the road well, even when fully loaded.
Best smaller tow car: Audi A3
If you only have a small trailer or caravan to tow, you really don’t need a huge 4×4. The Audi A3 hatchback can still tow up to 690kg unbraked, or a generous 1,800kg braked.
Audi’s 2.0 TDI diesel engine is ideal for towing, and the A3 has a superb chassis for driving. The new five-door Sportback model is definitely worth the £620 premium over the three-door as it offers more generous interior space.
