Comparing branded products at supermarkets
Asda was on average cheapest for our basket for the past five months. Ocado had previously been more expensive on average than Waitrose but was slightly cheaper in our November comparison. The products in the basket vary slightly depending on availability at the different supermarkets.
You can find out how customers rate Asda for customer service and quality in our supermarkets review – we surveyed over 11,000 Which? members to find out their views of the different supermarkets.
In order to work out the average price of our basket we used data from the independent shopping website mysupermarket.
Supermarket price comparison schemes
Most supermarkets have price comparison schemes – often giving you a voucher for the difference if your shopping (or parts of it) would have been cheaper elsewhere.
Tesco, Asda, Sainsburys all do this but who they check against and the terms differ. For instance, Asda gives you a voucher if your shopping isn’t 10% cheaper, Sainsbury’s only compares branded products and Ocado only checks against Tesco.
Waitrose price matches Tesco on branded items and this is included in the total. Our comparisons include special offer discounts but not multibuys.
