Thinking of buying a steam cleaner in the Christmas sales? To make sure you buy the best and don't get lumbered with a dud you'll need to know what to expect from major brands, including how reliable their products are. Our new guides provide the answers.

We’ve expanded the annual Which? reliability survey to cover steam cleaners and steam mops, which means we can now publish reliability ratings for leading steam cleaner brands such as Vax, Bissell, Karcher and Shark.

For each brand we reveal a score for reliability, a customer satisfaction score plus a snapshot of how well models from each brand have done in our tests, including the number of Best Buy and Don’t Buy steam cleaners.

Our experts have also summarised what we know about each brand to provide you with the inside track on what you can expect from each make of steam cleaner. So if you’re in the market for a steam mop to clean your floors, head for our steam mop brand guide. If you’d rather buy a cylinder steam cleaner for whole-house cleaning, check out our steam cleaner brand guide.

Reliable steam cleaners

Which? floor care expert Adrian Porter said: 'Since testing steam cleaners for the first time in 2012, Which? has received a number of reports from shoppers who've bought steam cleaners in their various forms, only to see them break.

'Following these comments, we introduced a build quality assessment and durability assessments into our steam cleaner test programme. These tests have helped us identify the models that you really can’t rely on, including one model that actually snapped during use.

'The addition of this survey, which includes information gained from over 1,000 people, adds another layer of insight into which brands you can trust to provide you a reliable steam cleaner – and which you cannot.'

Steam cleaner reviews

No one tests steam cleaners as thoroughly as we do. In our test lab, steam cleaners are pitted against a gauntlet of every day grime, including muddy footprints, pasta sauce, jam and oily windows. We also test cleaners on hard surfaces such as tiles and work tops, and see how well they remove odours from fabric.
