Supermarket comparison June 2014

Asda was the cheapest for our basket in June

Our monthly supermarket price comparison shows that in June Asda was the cheapest for the twelfth month running.

Asda continues its reign as the cheapest supermarket for our basket of goods. It can now boast 12 successive months as, on average, the cheapest in our monthly comparison.

This month Asda charged an average £173.69 for 81 branded products - at the other end of the scale Waitrose charged £188.96.

Our basket includes between 80 and 100 products, from toothpaste to cereal. We average the prices across the month, including special offer discounts but not multibuys. The online supermarkets Asda, Ocado, Sainsbury's, Tesco and Waitrose are included.

Online supermarkets on the rise

Big bricks-and-mortar supermarkets will lose sales to convenience stores, discounters and the internet, over the next five years, according to new data from food and grocery research charity IGD.

It suggests that online sales will more than double and convenience store sales increase significantly.

Want to know which supermarkets you rate most highly? We survey over 10,000 people each year to discover how customers rate their supermarket for everything from customer service to value for money. We ask about both in store and online experiences. Find out how the major supermarkets shaped up in our survey.

Supermarket price comparison schemes

You may find that supermarkets have price comparison schemes, which means that if some or all of your shopping would have been cheaper elsewhere you may be offered a voucher for the difference.

Asda, Ocado, Sainsburys and Tesco all have a price comparison scheme. However, which supermarkets they check prices against, the products they include and the terms can differ. For example, Sainsbury's only compares branded products and Ocado only checks against Tesco.

Waitrose price matches Tesco on branded items and this is included in our monthly price comparison.
