Apple iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 3

We've put the Apple iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3 to the test in the Which? lab. We scrutinised every inch of them and assessed the new tablets for battery life, screen quality, speed and ease of use.

Our comprehensive tests mean that we can tell you exactly how they square up to rivals such as the Samsung Galaxy Tab S as well as the previous generations of iPads.

What's new about the iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3?

The headline feature on the new iPads is the fingerprint reader (Touch ID). Placing your finger on the home button (which houses the fingerprint scanner) allows you to quickly unlock your tablet without the hassle of having to tap in a code. Touch ID can also be used to authorise payment of apps, music and films from the Apple store.

The iPad Air 2 sports a faster processor and new anti-reflective layer on the screen. Read our full iPad Air 2 review to see how effective this is in real life.

How we test tablets

Each and every tablet that passes through our labs is tested in the same way. This means that we can generate comparable scores and full test results to help you choose the best new tablet for your needs.

We run a series of speed tests as well as surfing the web and playing videos to see how speedy the tablet is, we also assess the screen in a variety of lighting conditions to see how it holds up.

And we run a set of battery tests to see how long the tablet will last when playing video or browsing the web via wi-fi. See our full review to see if the new slimmer iPad Air still manages to perform in the battery department.
