Like Nest, Hive and Netatmo before it, the Tado Smart Thermostat claims to help heat your home more efficiently and cut your energy bills. But is it just a load of hot air? Our researcher tried it out at home for a few months to bring you our first impressions.
The Tado Smart Thermostat is a wi-fi connected thermostat that allows you to control and monitor your heating remotely via an app on your PC, smartphone or tablet. It costs £199 (plus £90 for optional professional installation).
Manufacturer Tado claims its smart thermostat can cut up to 31% from your bills. So we wanted to find out more.
Our researcher had the Tado Smart Thermostat installed in her home to find out whether it really could cut her heating bills. And on first impressions, this smart thermostat didn’t make a noticeable impact on her energy costs.
Get our researcher’s full verdict on Tado, including how it compares to rivals like Nest and Hive, by reading our first look review of the Tado Smart Thermostat.
Using the Tado Smart Thermostat
Tado costs about the same amount to buy as Nest and Hive, although it’s more expensive if you opt for professional installation.
Like Hive and Nest, the Tado claims to learn the best way to heat your home over time. It does this by taking into account what type of building you live in and how quickly it heats up. Tado also keeps an eye on the weather forecast – and your movements – to establish the most efficient heating pattern.
Our researcher wasn’t convinced though. She said: ‘I found that having the heating controls at my fingertips encouraged me to prioritise comfort over economy.
‘If you’re already energy conscious and limit how much you use your heating, it’s unlikely to bring significant savings.’
Rent or Buy Tado
You can either buy a Tado Smart thermostat outright for £199, or rent it for £7.99 per month. You have to pay a year’s rent in advance, but you can see if a smart thermostat is right for you before shelling out the full amount.
Before you buy or rent, make sure you read our first look review to find out if it’s worth getting Tado, and whether you really need a smart thermostat.
