We test tumble dryers at 70% full and with smaller loads

Results from the latest round of tumble dryer tests from Which? are in and include one dryer provided at a reduced price for owners of five brands of fire-risk dryers.

But is it any good at drying and is the reduced price enough of an incentive to buy it?

Which? has just tested five tumble dryers, so if you’re in the market for a new vented or condenser model, do check out our Which? tumble dryer reviews to find the best dryer for your home.

These reviews include the vented Hotpoint TVFM70BGP, one of the dryers on offer at the reduced price of £59 to owners of fire risk Hotpoint, Indesit, Creda, Swan and Proline dryers.

To find out whether this dryer is actually any good at drying, we sent it to the Which? Test Lab. Read our full review of the Hotpoint TVFM70BGP.

Reading our independent tumble dryer reviews will also help you to avoid the dryers we’ve just tested that don’t dry clothes thoroughly enough and those that dry some items while leaving others still damp.

Fire risk tumble dryers

We've also just tested the Indesit IDC8T3B and the Hotpoint TVFM70BGP and CDN7000BP. Earlier versions of these models were affected by the fire-risk safety alert. But new models carrying a green dot sticker inside the door, or on the back panel, have been modified and will be safe to use.

If there's no sticker, call 0800 151 0905 quoting the model and serial number to check if your dryer is safe to use.

How we test tumble dryers

We test how well tumble dryers dry both cotton and synthetic loads and we test their cupboard-dry and iron-dry settings. We test them when they’re 70% full, because that’s how most of us use our machines but we also test them with smaller loads too.

We check how quickly they dry clothes, how accurately they do it and we record how creased the clothes are after they’ve been dried. We find out how dry all the clothes in the dryer are by weighing each item on a set of scales both before and after the drying program.
