Smeg-SBS63XED fridge freezer

The Smeg SBS63XED American fridge freezer brings Smeg retro styling bang up to date

This ultra-modern American-style Smeg is a far cry from the retro-styling and fifties look we’ve come to expect from this iconic fridge freezer brand. It’s also four times more expensive than the cheapest fridge freezer model we've just tested alongside it.

The Smeg SBS63XED boasts a stainless steel finish, digital display and an automatic ice and chilled water dispenser.

But its premium features come at a hefty price: you’ll have to fork out £1,529 to get this Smeg into your kitchen. For similar money, you could get four Hotpoint XUL85T3UWOJH fridge freezers – and still have a couple of hundred pounds to play with.

We’ve just tested both of these fridge freezers – plus a Beko and three Ikea models – to see whether they keep your food safely chilled and frozen until you’re ready to eat it.

Smeg Fridge freezer reviews

There’s no denying that the good looks and sleek design of a Smeg fridge freezer can add instant style kudos to your kitchen.

Smeg appliances tend to have more features than many fridge freezers, and this American-style model is no exception. It has independent fridge and freezer cooling systems, which help keep moisture in the fridge and prevent your food drying out; an automatic water and ice dispenser; and a chill compartment for storing meat and fish at extra-cold temperatures.

If you're thinking of buying a Smeg, Which? fridge freezer expert Richard Wilkinson has these tips to bear in mind. ‘Before you buy a Smeg fridge freezer, check how much space you’ve got in your kitchen as some models are wider than normal,' he says.

‘If you can, avoid putting a Smeg fridge freezer next to a wall in your kitchen as the door needs space to open fully. Also, make sure you know which way you want the door to open and buy a model with the door attached on the correct side – as you can’t swap them over.’

We’ve also just tested three conventional stainless-steel fridge freezers from Ikea, costing between £500 and £900.

We've also tested fridge freezer models from Beko and Hotpoint.

At the cheaper end of the scale, the large Beko CFDL7914S which costs £399 is wider than most (70cm) and has a water dispenser that you fill from the tap.

The Hotpoint XUL85T3UWOJH has a large four drawer freezer and costs just £328.
