BMW’s new compact 4x4 fills the gap below the existing X3 and competes with rivals such as the Ford Kuga and VW Tiguan. It’s based on the 3 Series and available with a choice of diesel engines, plus either rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. Priced from around £23k, the X1 seems to offer the best of both worlds: 4x4 versatility with fuel economy that wouldn't shame a supermini. Has the X1 got the X-factor?
