Zoom Q3 stereo audio and video recorder

Zoom has previously made quite a few audio recording devices, but the Q3 (£240 from Zoom4u.co.uk) is the first to feature an integrated camcorder. We took it out and about for a hands-on first look review.

Zoom Q3 sound quality

First we tried the Zoom Q3 out at home, where we recorded a band playing. We were really impressed with the quality of the recording, and only needed to perform some basic level checks to find the best spot in the room to place the device. It doesn’t quite compete with professional studio equipment, but for the sheer ease of use and substantially lower cost, the results are good.

We also recorded a live gig in a bar – having first made sure recording was allowed. The sound quality was more impressive than anything that could be taken on a mobile phone or many SD or HD camcorders – unless you use an external microphone.

Recording video on the Q3

The video quality is comparable to some of the other pocket camcorders on the market, such as the Flip Ultra and the Kodak Zi6. However, it really is the audio quality that gives this product the edge – making it great for anyone who wants to record their band playing and upload it to YouTube.

The video resolution is 640 x 480 at 30 frames per second. Files are saved in the MP4 format, and there’s a 2x digital zoom. However, it’s best to use the zoom when not recording as it’s not terribly smooth. You’ll also get better results if you set the Q3 up, ideally on a tripod, before you begin your shoot.

The microphone sits at the top of the device, so you can record yourself giving a real-time commentary over the action you’re shooting.

Zoom Q3 features and extras

The Zoom Q3 runs on two AA batteries and comes with a 2GB SD card. It can take SD cards and SDHC cards with memories up to 32GB.

It has a 2.4-inch LCD, wind-reduction technology and controllable gain, which will allow you to get the best out of very loud and very quiet recordings.

An external microphone can be added and there’s a direct output that will allow you to watch you footage back on TV directly from the Q3. There’s also a 3.5mm headphone socket and a USB port – though the cable is very short.

You can choose from a variety of sound qualities, and the time remaining on the memory card is clearly displayed on the LCD above the audio levels.

Operation is very simple, and the Zoom Q3 comes supplied with a soft carry case and microphone wind muffler.

Pros: Great audio recording quality, easy to use, fun

Cons: Video quality could be better, digital zoom is poor
