Bluetooth headsets: FAQS
Are bluetooth headsets comfortable to wear?
Bluetooth headsets are light and usually pretty comfortable to wear
Most of the time, yes. They're lightweight, and many models come with different sized interchangeable ear-pieces, so you're more likely to get a comfy fit.
Our test panel rated each headset on test for comfort, and while this is subjective, this rating gives an idea of how comfortable each headset is.
Are there different types of headset?
There are two types of headset: ones that fit over the ear and ones that curve around behind it. The latter are a bit more discreet to wear, but which type you should choose comes down to personal preference.
Jabra are famed for their designs that curve around behind the ear.
What's the law about driving when using a mobile phone?
The law states that while driving, you can't make a call, receive a call, text or do anything with your phone while it's in your hand or held between your ear and shoulder.
This is unless you're safely parked, you're in a traffic jam with your engine off or you have to call the emergency services and stopping is impossible.
Don't you still get distracted if you use a bluetooth headset while driving?
Yes. Using a mobile phone in your hand or resting against your shoulder and ear is very dangerous, but using a bluetooth headset doesn't completely eradicate that risk. Carnegie Mellon University researchers in the United States used brain imaging tehniques to show that even just listening to a mobile phone conversation while driving cuts your attention on the road by more than a third.
How do you set up a bluetooth headset?
When you buy your headset, you'll need to 'pair', or connect it, with your phone. To do this, turn both devices on, switching on Bluetooth on your phone as well, then search for Bluetooth devices with your phone.
When the phone finds the headset, select the pair option.
What type of battery do they take?
All bluetooth headsets these days are powered by a small, internal rechargeable battery.
What's battery life like?
It can be pretty good. Good headsets have a talk time of over seven hours. Most headsets can be charged up in about 2-2.5 hours.
