First, think about what you'll be using the binoculars for

The models in our test were chosen with travel in mind, focusing on compact multipurpose binoculars that offer all-round performance.

However, there are many different types of binoculars to suit different needs – bird watching, astronomy, marine, sports, sightseeing, walking etc. Each of these types of can differ in magnification, objective lens diameter and features, and choosing the pair that’s ideal for you will depend on what you plan to use them for.

For example, an expert bird watcher viewing from a hide on an overcast afternoon will require a pair of binoculars with a larger objective lens to let in more light, while an amateur bird watcher sitting in a sunny back garden should be fine to view birds with a more compact model.

See our guide to choosing binoculars for more advice on finding the best pair for you.

Try before you buy

When picking your pair of binoculars it’s important to get hands on. Our thorough testing identifies the best-performing binoculars based on a range of factors, however, it’s best to try before you buy to ensure the right combination of comfort, size, weight, ease-of-use and performance.
