DVD burning software: Features explained
If you don’t have the right software for burning DVDs, backing up large files or sharing data can become a real chore – and one that rarely gets done. But there are plenty of options to choose from and you’re bound to find one that’s right for you.
Make the most of your DVD burner with the best software
Of course, you’ll need a PC with a DVD burner attached, but if your PC doesn’t have one, don’t despair. Check out our test of external DVD drives to find one you can easily add to your computer.
Types of DVD burning software
Bundled with the hardware
When you buy a new DVD burner, the chances are you’ll find some software bundled with it. This is usually a cut-down version of a full-price product, and the software manufacturers are hoping you’ll be so impressed you’ll go on to spend your money on a fuller version.
Full-price software
The full-price products from the manufacturers aim to offer you more features and capabilities than the bundled software, and can be a good upgrade option for demanding users. Or, if you have no software at all, and want the comfort and support of a purchased product, then think about using one of these.
Software you can download for free
If you need some software but don’t want to part with any money, then you’ll find software that you can download for free. It might not be as fancy as the full-price products, but you’ll be able to do the basics.
Windows Vista
Finally, if you’re using Windows Vista, you may already have everything you need. The exact capability varies depending on the version of Vista you’re using, but Vista Home Premium, for example, has built-in support for writing data or video to DVD.
Extra features to look out for
In addition to being able to simply write data to a disc, look out for extra features such as being able to print disc labels or case inlays, or to play back video footage.
